WELCOME TO KENNETT GIRLS LACROSSE!

We are committed to providing a fun, safe, and positive environment devoted to promoting educational, recreational, and competitive lacrosse programs for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  We seek to develop each player to the best of their ability and promote a spirit of sportsmanship and community with players, coaches, and parents/guardians.

This league is a member of the Philadelphia Area Girls Lacrosse Association (PAGLA), abides by its rules and guidelines, and is open to student athletes living in the Kennett Consolidated School District. The number of players Kennett Girls Lacrosse can accept is directly related to the number of coaches who volunteer.  In order to ensure a positive experience for players, there will be limits set for each age group based on the number of coaches who volunteer.

Grade

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade (K/2)

The goal for this age group is fun and learning a new sport with limited emphasis on winning and losing.  Practices will focus on fundamental skills such as catching, cradling, throwing, passing, shooting, and ground ball pick ups.  There is no stick checking or goalies.

Games are played half-field with 4 v 4 players without restraining line.  All players experience offensive and defensive positioning.  The purpose of 4 v 4 is to allow for “more touches” on the ball for all players and to help spread out the game for more effective passing and ball movement.

3rd and 4th Grade (3/4)

In this age group, participants will be placed on evenly balanced teams.  We will introduce lacrosse in an environment geared toward fun and learning with an emphasis on skill development and teamwork.  Practices will focus on skills such as catching cradling, throwing, ground ball pick up, offense and defense, passing, etc. There is no stick checking and the goalie position is introduced and played in the
games.

Games are played half field with 7 v 7 players with mid-field restraining line. Players are placed in offensive, midfield, and defensive positions to understand positions and enhance game understanding and added rules.

5th and 6th Grade (5/6)

In this age group, participants will be evaluated and placed on evenly balanced teams.  We will introduce lacrosse in an environment geared toward fun and learning with an emphasis on skill development and teamwork.  Practices will focus on enhancing skills such as catching, cradling, passing, throwing, ground ball pick up, offense, defense, shooting space, and the rules of full field play.  Modified stick checking and goalie position required.

Games are played FULL field with 11 v 11 players, with goalie.   All US Lacrosse rules and positions apply at this grade level.

7th and 8th Grade (7/8)

In this age group, previous lacrosse experience is required.  Participants will be placed on evenly balanced or skill based teams (A or B team).  The focus is still on fun and learning with the addition of more advanced skill and team concepts and preparing for high school level of play.  Designed as a game only division - however, please be prepared for weekly practices.

Games are played FULL field with 11 v 11 players, with goalie.   All US Lacrosse rules and positions apply at this grade level.

Equipment and Uniform

Safety is of utmost importance to our organization and each player will need to provide her own equipment. For each age level, this includes a stick, mouthguard, face mask and US Lacrosse approved eye gear. Helmets are optional, but not required. We encourage cleats, but sneakers are suitable for younger girls. The required uniform includes a skort, pinnie, and socks.

It is up to parents/guardians to ensure their player is using equipment that meets current safety standards. The Safety Equipment Institute is a third party certification organization and this link will take you to that organization’s certification for recreational sports equipment. https://www.seinet.org/search.htm

The Season: Practices and Games

The season will begin around mid March and end by the beginning of June. Practices will take place twice a week, with games on Saturdays and an occasional Sunday.  Practices and games will take place on local fields and in nearby school districts. Tournaments may be offered to different age groups throughout the season.

Coaching

All Kennett Girls Lacrosse coaches volunteer their personal time to make Kennett Girls Lacrosse a huge success.  The number of participants the program can accept is directly related to the number of coaches who volunteer. In order to ensure a positive experience for everyone, there will be limits set for each age group based on the number of coaches who volunteer.

Coaching is a great way to support families and youth in the Kennett community. Coaches teach more than sport specific skills - they help our young athletes develop important life skills.  As a coach, you can have a positive influence on parents and players, as well as be an excellent example of community support and pride.  You’ve never coached? No problem!  The league will pay for US Lacrosse membership for Head coaches, provide training for assistant coaches, and will pay for any US Lacrosse education sessions.
